Hunting guides and the top hunting ranches in Texas
3 min readBest whitetail deer hunting in Texas and hunting tips? Once you’re in a promising location, don’t give up on it just because your buck doesn’t show up on the first day. The following day’s forecast, even if only slightly different, could put that deer in your sights. Besides, the whitetail season is too short to waste time waiting for long-john weather, and you may miss a chance at a trophy buck if you do. If that creek or pond is tucked back in the woods, consider setting up right on the water source, as bucks will often grab a drink before heading out to feed in hot weather. When hunting north-slope timber, use the ridges to hide your approach.
Deer Behavior: Whitetails fatten up now, and most travel a simple circuit between bedding and feeding areas. As the month goes on, look for emerging rub lines along these routes. Hotspots: Locate mature timber on north-facing slopes. During the early-season heat, these spots offer cool bedding areas, and having white oaks nearby makes them more attractive to deer. Also look for newly seeded alfalfa fields, which provide succulent, high-protein forage. Small secluded fields and food plots close to cover are tops. And soft-mast groves, such as persimmon, apple, or dogwood, are producing fruit that deer crave now.
This was an amazing adventure for our family of six. I cannot say enough good things about this place. Cabins with private bathrooms are very clean. Food is DELICIOUS. Most of all they are #1 in hospitality. They went above and beyond to make us feel at home and like we were part of their family. Thank you so much for a fabulous adventure. Don Kisky, Whitetail Freaks TV: There are many considerations when setting up a ground blind before the season. Most important, set it where the predominant wind allows you to hunt the most days. Don’t set up for an east wind if you won’t ever get one. If you’re hunting this blind in the morning, don’t be facing the sun. Same goes for an evening hunt. If the sun’s shining inside your blind, deer will pick you out. You don’t have to do an excellent job brushing the blind in if you’re doing it beforehand. If you’re setting up before season, leave the windows how you’ll use them while hunting so deer get accustomed to it.
