Yachting tip of the day: If you like to cook on board, the propane tanks supplied as standard with many modern yachts won’t get you far. Whether we bake bread or not, the one thing we all do is boil the kettle. Years ago I realized that if I counted the number of strokes on my galley foot or hand pump that represented a mug-full, then tipped the right amount into the kettle, I’d use enough propane to boil it and no more. If you only have pressure water you’ve no chance, but old-fashioned manual pumps are simple enough to install. I keep a charcoal inline filter on mine and always use it for drinking water, so no matter where I filled my tanks, I’m guaranteed a decent mug of coffee.

Jumeirah Mosque is considered by many to be the most beautiful of Dubai’s mosques. An exact copy of Cairo’s Al-Azhar Mosque, which is eight times its size, the Jumeirah Mosque is a fine example of Islamic architecture. This stone structure is built in the medieval Fatimid tradition, with two minarets that display the subtle details in the stonework. It is particularly attractive in the evening when lit with floodlights. The Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Centre for Cultural Understanding (which also runs a program of tours, lectures, Arabic classes, and cultural meals) organizes guided tours of the mosque designed to try to foster a better understanding of the Muslim faith. Tours begin at 10am daily, except Fridays.

Standing 828 meters high, Burj Khalifa is the tallest human-made structure in the world, and it is hard to miss. Located in Downtown Dubai, besides the mighty Dubai Mall, Burj Khalifa is the most iconic structure in the Dubai skyline. If you are using the metro, you have to get down at Dubai Mall metro station to access this tallest building. You can walk through the air-conditioned pass or take a bus to the point. The tickets to the Burj Khalifa top is available inside the Dubai Mall. However, if you want to avoid the hassle of finding the office and dealing with long queues, book your At the Top, Burj Khalifa tickets in advance with Sabsan Holidays. There are two observation decks open for the public. The view from the observation deck (level 124) is super gorgeous on a clear day. There are telescopes built with technology that provides high definition views of landmarks and attractions beyond the city. It’s also equipped with a feature that reveals how the town looks like during day and night. Come prepared with your camera because the view from the top is going to take your breath away.

Aside from seasons and events, yachts of the same size may also differ in price and this may be down to a vast difference in on board amenities. A yacht which boasts an on board cinema or lavish water toys may have a higher base rate compared with a yacht of minimal amenities of the same size. If it is unclear as to why two yachts of the same size are vastly different in price, ask your yacht broker to explain what the differences are. Once you are clear on what the base price is and why, it is important to discover what costs will be applicable on top and this is dependent on the type of charter contract used. Fuel can be another cost and, again, it depends on how much the yacht cruises and how fast, too. Time spent at anchor will include the fuel for the generators, while shore-side electricity when at a dock is also an extra. Don’t forget that fuel is also charged for the tenders and water toys, so you’ll pay for the fuel used while zipping around on the jetskis.
