The Allure of electric classic cars – Classic cars have an intrinsic charm that transcends time. Their graceful contours, artistic designs, and rich history weave a tapestry that transports us to a bygone era. But how can we preserve this charm while embracing a greener future? The Emergence of electric classic cars – Enter the electric classic car—a concept that gracefully bridges the gap between the past and the present. It’s a transformation that merges nostalgia with environmental consciousness.

Not everything Smart has produced is the cleverest idea, but in the grand scheme of things the electrified ForFour isn’t a bad choice at all, as long as it’s priced accordingly. This little four-seater has the tiny charm of European city cars such as the Fiat 500 or Twingo, and that shouldn’t be a surprise as it shares a body with the latter. The electric option isn’t vastly different to the two-seater EQ ForTwo, but it’s pushing a bit more weight around. Basic, and a touch crude in places, the Smart is the opposite of the BMW i3 in terms of technical investment; it’s a conventional car adapted for electricity. The compromises are fewer than you’d think apart from the big one – or rather, the small one, as the 17.6kWh battery is about the same capacity as some plug-in hybrids now. Range suffers accordingly and you’ll be lucky to get 70 miles of motorway speeds even in summer.

Acquiring a traditional classic car entails the initial purchase of the vehicle itself. The financial outlay for procuring a classic car can span a broad spectrum, contingent upon a medley of variables. These factors include the car’s make, model, rarity, and its prevailing condition. Pristine classic gems from renowned manufacturers often command a premium, while more commonplace models in need of restoration may be acquired at a more budget-friendly price point.

With new electric cars arriving all the time, now could be the perfect time to switch to an EV. If you’ve still got some questions, we look at how electric cars works, advantages of electric cars and how much it costs to charge an electric car further down the page. First though, here’s our guide to the best electric cars you can buy in the UK today. The Skoda Enyaq iV could be the electric car that many of us have been waiting for. It’s certainly one of the very best electric cars you can buy right now. Based on the same platform as Volkswagen’s ID.4 and the Audi Q4 e-tron, we think it’s the Enyaq that’s the best choice out of the three cars. Why’s that you ask? Surely Volkswagen and Audi trumps Skoda? Don’t get us wrong, the ID.4 and Q4 e-tron are very good electric cars, it’s just that the Enyaq offers greater practicality, more generous kit levels and a more affordable price tag.

Starting at just under £37,000, the Ioniq 5 features a superb infotainment system and generous standard kit, while the available space has to be seen to be believed. It’s comfortable, too, so you’ll relish the chance of racking up the miles. We certainly did, which is why we named the Hyundai Ioniq 5 our Car of the Year for 2021. The Kia EV6 is the sister vehicle to the Hyundai Ioniq 5, so it’s a great pick if you love that model’s technology, but aren’t quite as sold on its retro-futuristic looks. The EV6 is arguably the more conventional of the two, and it’s a bit lower and more sporting. This is reflected in its handling, with slightly firmer suspension offering sharper responses. It’s offered in Long Range RWD, Long Range AWD and a high-performance GT version, and the entry-level version is our favourite. It not only offers the best range figure of up to 328 miles from its 77.4kWh battery, but we also found its 7.2-second 0-62mph time to be quick enough.

Skoda is renowned for producing great-value and well thought-out family cars with petrol and diesel engines, but the Enyaq iV is its first effort to do the same with electric power. And it’s a very good one. Using the VW Group’s dedicated MEB electric-car architecture means there’s an enormous amount of interior space for both passengers and luggage, not to mention great all-round visibility through those big windows. Technology-wise, you can choose from three different powertrain options: the Enyaq iV 60, the Enyaq iV 80 and the all-wheel-drive Enyaq iV 80x. They deliver between 255 and 336 miles of driving range, with all models getting decent rapid-charging capability so you can top up quickly on a longer journey. There are also a variety of interior ‘themes’ to choose from, with sustainable materials employed to give a unique feel to the cabin.

The new Porsche Taycan is a brilliant car to drive, remaining true to its maker’s heritage and leaving you in no doubt that this is a ‘proper’ Porsche sports saloon. The Taycan delivers sports car-like handling, with ferocious acceleration and great agility – yet still offers four seats and a usable range. It’s not often that a car comes along that feels truly revolutionary, but that is exactly what the Porsche Taycan is – and it shows how much fun a plug-in future can be. Despite being a hefty 2.2-tonnes in weight, it hides its bulk well, and is able to weave neatly through tight corners and demolish fast, sweeping bends. The Taycan’s raw pace is, frankly, ridiculous; in ‘standard’ 523bhp 4S guise it manages the 0-62mph benchmark in 4.0s, although if you upgrade to the 750bhp Turbo S version, it’s a staggeringly quick 2.8s. Don’t forget, though, the Taycan should also be pretty easy to live with as a daily driver. Refinement is top notch and, while ride comfort is firm, the air suspension does its job of dealing with the broken, uneven tarmac of UK roads.
